WebCryptobiosis evolved independently at least two times in tardigrades, in eutardigrades and in echiniscoids. Within each evolutionary line, the absence of cryptobiotic abilities is more related to selective pressures to local habitat adaptation than to phylogenetic relationships. WebCryptobiosis is a general term which, as indicated by Keilin (1959), comprises those states of an organism which show no visible sign of life and of which the metabolic activity becomes hardly measurable, eventually reaching a reversible standstill.
